Information on Blood in Urine
Excretion of blood in the urine is referred to as hematuria. Red or pink urine, visible to the eye is referred to as gross hematuria. Microscopic hematuria is blood in urine, which is visible under the microscope. Renal stones and urinary tract infections are the common causes of hematuria. Excessive exercise, trauma and voiding problems also result in blood in urine. Serious conditions resulting in hematuria are sickle cell disease, kidney tumor, renal obstruction, prostatic enlargement and bladder tumors. The cause of the condition determines the mode of treatment. Generally, the loss of blood is not to a great extent. Immediate attention is required in case of individuals suffering from gross hematuria. Urinary tract infection causing hematuria is treated with antibiotics. Hematuria due to renal stones is treated by providing treatment to the renal stone. If the cause is identified, immediate treatment should be provided. Delay in analyzing the cause results in delayed treatment, thereby complicating the condition. Recurrence of blood in urine needs detailed diagnosis. Men above the age of 50 years with hematuria, should diagnose for prostate cancer.
