A menstrual period in women lasts generally for 2 to 7 days. The normal menstrual pattern ranges from 21 to 35 days, the normal being 28 day cycle. If the pattern deviates from the regular cycle it is called irregular menses or abnormal uterine bleeding.

This condition happens if the cycle is longer or heavier than normal, bleeding taking place in between the periods or if there is absence of periods for long period of time. The reason causing such irregularities is due to hormonal imbalance. Ovulation in women does not take place as there is alteration in brain proteins as well as in the hormones causing ovulation leading to low follicle development and low release of estrogens.

This condition is called as hypothalamic amenorrhea. Stress, eating disorders like bulimia and anorexia, heavy cigarette smoking, alcohol drinking as well caffeine drinking could lead to changes in menstrual pattern and can cause delay in menstruation.

Certain remedies for regularizing menses are:-
  • Have a healthy diet with proper intake of fruits and vegetables. Avoid fast foods as well as aerated drinks. Our body requires energy to carry out functions of the systems. Hence avoid heavy dieting or frequent skipping of meals as it can lead the body to the starving mode.
  • Too much of strain and anxiety is harmful. Relax yourself. Give quality time for various activities so that the body is fit mentally as well as physically.
  • Avoid excessive coitus as well as strenuous exercise.
  • Menstrual herbs like chase tree and dong gui is effective in balancing the hormones if it is taken regularly.
  • Grind a piece of fresh ginger and boil it in a cup of water. This infusion is taken thrice daily with sugar after meals.
  • Take a teaspoon of powdered dry mint leaves and a teaspoon of honey thrice daily.
A regular check up with specialist or gynecologist is also essential regarding this problem.
