Coughing is the body’s natural mechanism of removing phlegm. A lot of mucus may get stuck in your throat and nasal passages, making it difficult for air to pass through. Coughing ensures that the mucus is expelled from the body and that breathing is once again easier.
There is also a non-productive cough in which no mucus is expelled when the coughing action takes place. Both acute and chronic cough are a sign respiratory distress. These should be given keen medical attention, as they could often uncover more serious conditions such as bronchitis.
A persistent dry cough is usually more harmful than the productive cough that expels mucus. In most cases, dry cough may cause stress on the larynx, causing laryngitis. Laryngitis in turn makes the cough more severe. There are many home remedies for a cough that can be used when you are experiencing persistent cough, acute or chronic. It is also good to know that some of the best cough medicines are those that are made at home. These coughing remedies are usually very simple and aid in the removal of phlegm and mucus. Most of the remedies of cough are easy to use and give immediate relief.
- An effective cough treatment is that which helps loosen up the congestion in the chest and the respiratory tract. Inhaling steam can help loosen up the pent up phlegm in the airways of the lungs. The warmth of the steam loosens up the phlegm, making it easier for the coughing action to get rid of it. To inhale steam, heat a large pot or pan of water, then cover your head, bend over the pot and inhale the fresh steam coming off it.
- One of the best natural cough remedies is to slice a lemon and sprinkle some black pepper on it. Suck the lemon repeatedly. Lemon is rich in vitamin C, which helps you with the cough. Black pepper warms up the body from inside, thus loosening the congestion inside.
- The best cough treatment at home is to drink lots of fluids. These fluids help loosen the phlegm and liquefy it so that it can be expelled from the body more easily. You can also consume a clove of garlic in the night to keep your body warm internally. This is a great remedy for persistent dry cough at night. Garlic warms up the body and is especially useful in winters. However, refrain from consuming garlic cloves during the day as it can cause bad breath.
- Grapes make an excellent expectorant. Consuming grapes everyday can help you regulate the respiratory function and improve the tone of the lungs.
- One could also make a number of natural cough remedies with honey. Take one teaspoon of honey and add the fresh juice of ginger and a pinch of black pepper to it. Consume this remedy twice every day. This works well for sore throats as well. If you do not have ginger juice or black pepper, this remedy can be made with honey and white pepper as well.
- Grind a handful or dried resins and add them to a cup of water. Add sugar to this mixture and heat till the concoction becomes a little syrupy in consistency. Now take this off the heat and allow it to cool. Consume a spoonful from this syrup twice every day. This can also be a good cough treatment during pregnancy.
There are many coughing remedies for children as well. These remedies, however, should be milder than those used in adults. The resin and sugar syrup would be ideally a good natural cough remedy for babies as well. Since this remedy is sweet, the child will suck on it with pleasure. This is also one of the best remedies for cough at night. Since persistent dry cough causes stress on the larynx, it is important to nip it in the bud.
These remedies for cough and congestion are excellent when used regularly. Continue using them till you find relief. These remedies for cough and cold also have almost negligible amount of side effects on the body and can be used harmlessly However, keep in mind that any cough that lasts for more than two weeks requires medical attention.
