Many people suffer from gastric problems occurring due to various reasons. Food gives us nutrition and energy and is processed and converted into a usable form by the digestive processes. Gastric problems are usually caused when the body is unable to digest food properly, leading to nausea, heart burn, and excessive burping.

Other symptoms include abdominal pain, bloating or a difficulty in passing gas which causes great discomfort. Severe gastric problems also cause giddiness and fainting spells. Gastric problems could be due to a wide variety of reasons like heavy meals, eating at irregular intervals or eating very spicy food. Eating very fast could cause problems as the food is not chewed properly and allows a lot of air to enter the food pipe. Alcohol intake and smoking also reduces the body’s ability to digest food well. Medication, obesity, lack of rest, stress and anxiety contribute to gastric problems as well. Worms that live in the intestinal tract may also cause gastric problems.

The best remedy for gastric problems is regulating eating habits. Skipping meals often leads to formation of gas in the body. Chewing food properly and being calm and relaxed especially while eating helps in better digestion. Spicy, fried or fatty foods should be avoided. You should also avoid foods that increase gas in the body like pulses, cauliflower, cabbage, white radish, cucumber and dried beans. Drinking plenty of water helps in detoxifying the body. Alcohol, caffeine and sparkling drinks should be avoided as they put unnecessary pressure on the gastric system. Brisk walking or jogging stimulates the digestive tract and reduces the chances of gastric problems.

Mint leaves added to boiled water helps relieve gastric problems. Chewing a mixture of tamarind, sugar and cumin seeds relieves discomfort. Black tea with mint, chamomile or ginger also helps in the proper digestion of food. Apple cider vinegar or lime mixed in drinking water is also a good remedy. Roasted garlic cloves taken with a glass of water helps overcome gastric problems too, as does the chewing of fennel seeds. Cumin seeds, mixed with rock salt and black pepper in a medium of butter milk, when ingested three to four times a day, will help in the digestion of food and is an effective remedy for worms in the digestive tract. Once the digestive system is functioning normally, the giddy spells will no longer be a problem. Kapalabhathi is a good yoga exercise, as it involves the action of the diaphragm muscle. Strengthening this muscle ensures that gastric acids are not allowed back into the esophagus.
