An eye infection or sty is a condition where the gland at the eyelid gets infected. A lump/pimple develops on the eyelid, and this can be visible both on the inside and outside of the eyelid. Some of the symptoms of a sty include pain, tenderness, swelling, and an uneasy feeling in the eye.
What causes a sty? A sty is caused due to the infection of the meibomian glands present in the eyelid. These eye glands, as they are also called, keep the eyeball lubricated. The infection takes place when the glands get clogged. In addition to this, another sty in the eye cause is infection of the hair follicle near the eyelash due to the use of a contaminated makeup brush or mascara. A stye is caused by bacteria known as staphylococcal. These bacteria are mostly found in an individual’s nasal passage and easily move into the eye. If you’re wondering about sty in the treatment, here are a few tips on how to get rid of a sty in the eye.
- An effective eye stye treatment is the use of coriander seeds. Boil one teaspoon of coriander seeds in one cup water. Wash your eyes with this preparation about three to four times during the day.
- Apply a paste made of raw potato externally on your inflamed eye. This will help reduce the swelling.
- Alum water used to wash the eye provides great relief in case of a sty. Take about two to three alum granules and mix it well in a cup of water. Use this alum water to wash the eye for quick relief.
- Used tea bags when placed on the eye for about 10 minutes can help cool the eye and provide relief.
- Place the pulpy side of a slit aloe leaf on the infected eye. This is an effective eye stye treatment.
- An eye infection or stye can also be got rid of by applying a warm washcloth or compress to the eye for 10 to 15 minutes. This has to be done at least four to six times daily. This is quite an effective home cure as it accelerates the sty’s rupture and provides relief from the symptoms.
- Another effective eye stye treatment is the use of turmeric eye drops, two to three times in a day. Add one teaspoon of turmeric to some water (two cups) and boil it till it gets to about half the quantity. Pass this liquid through a fine sieve till all the granules of turmeric are removed. Use this liquid for quick relief from a stye.
- Soak a clove in water and apply it to the infected part of the eye to get relief from the pain.
- Drinking a cup of dandelion tea, which has antibacterial properties, can help the body fight against the bacteria that have caused the stye.
- Make a warm compress with guava leaves to help reduce the redness, pain, and swelling in the eye.
While those were some home remedies, here are a few measures you can take to prevent a sty from developing. Make sure that you follow proper hygienic measures such as washing your hands. In addition to this, do not share your cosmetic tools (eyelash combs or lash curlers) and cosmetics with others. Your makeup tools should always be kept clean. Once your eye makeup gets contaminated or old, it is best that you discard it. Also make sure that you avoid touching the areas surrounding the eye.
In case the sty becomes worse or persists after seven to eight days, it is best that you contact your health care provider. He /she will recommend a steroid or antibiotic to reduce the swelling. If required, he will use a simple procedure to lance the sty.

Natural Treatment for Sties in Eyes
Sties in the eyes can sometimes be of the painful variety. In this case, it is imperative to get rid of them as soon as possible. There are countless home remedies that can provide relief from these sties. An old wive's tale dictates that a very large iron nail, or a piece of iron rubbed around the sty area will help in getting rid of it faster. Apparently, the iron helps to reduce the sty and heal the area considerably. Applying fresh garlic juice to the outer part of your sty will heal it.
You can also take a whole clove, and rub it vigorously on a marble surface with a drop of water to make a fine, thick paste. This is to be applied around the entire area of the sty. The heat from the clove will draw out the sty and heal it quickly. You must be very careful to avoid getting the paste into your eye, as this may cause serious damage to a delicate organ like the eye. This is also a remedy that may only be followed for a sty that has been around for a few days and is still showing no signs of healing. This method is considered to be an indirect cauterization of sorts. It will remove and heal the entire sty.
