How To Cover Up Bald Spots

by Sam Malone

We usually associate baldness with only elderly women or men, but a number of young and middle-aged people also suffer from bald spots. This is a sign of androgenic alopecia. Having bald spots can be quite embarrassing, especially in women. While there are treatments that may be prescribed by the physician, there are also cosmetic options to help cover bald spots till your hair grows back again.

It is important to consider the pros and cons of any option that you try out, as while some of them may help in covering bald spots, they could lead to further hair damage. Here are some ways:

Hair Extensions

The weave is meant to cover your entire head so it can be beneficial to use hair extensions to cover bald spots by doing it yourself at home.

  • Tie your hair up in a pony tail. Place a wig cap over your head, and spray the hair with spritz.
  • Use a hair dryer to dry out the wet hair and then place a cap over your head. Make sure your entire head is covered and your hair is inside the cap. Continue to blow dry your hair.
  • Measure the hair extension to the amount required for the back of your head. Apply bonding glue to the extension, and starting from the back of the neck; place the extension on the wig cap.
  • Press the extension onto the wig with your fingers and then blow dry it.
  • Continue applying the extensions in a similar fashion till you reach the center of your head. To close the space, cut extensions into smaller measurements, and glue them on till the space is all covered.

Hairstyles

There is also the option of hairstyles to cover up bald spots.

  • Braid: If the bald spot is at the top of the head, back or middle of the head, a French braid or a regular braid can help hide the spot. But remember to leave the hair a bit loose in order to let the scalp breathe but firm enough to hold the braid in place and cover the spots.
  • Short hair: For mild bald spots, it would be good to have your hair short which can help hide them. Long thin hair can be more challenging to cover bald spots.
  • Perms: Curly, wavy hair is great for bald spots as it thickens the hair and spreads out to cover the patches up.
Hair extensions and using any hair perming solutions could lead to further hair damage, so it is best to consult with your physician to help make the right choice.
