Symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis


One of the first signs of Achilles Tendonitis is pain in the heel or ankle. The pain may develop gradually and will probably worsen with time. Given below are some of the most commonly experienced signs and symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis:

  • Experiencing a mild ache below the calf area and just above the heel, after running or engaging in any other activity
  • Suffering from severe pain above the heel, usually after climbing the stairs, sprinting, running for a long period of time, or engaging in another strenuous activity
  • Noticing stiffness or tenderness around the tendon in the morning, which improves after mild activity
  • Appearance of a bump or a mild swelling on the Achilles tendon
  • Hearing a creaking or a crackling sound when you move the tendon or touch it
  • Sluggishness or weakness in the lower leg area  
  • Bruising or redness on the skin around the affected tendon
In case you notice any of the symptoms mentioned above on more than one occasion it is important for you to seek immediate medical attention. While these are mainly the symptoms of Achilles Tendonitis, some of them may be caused by the inflammation or damage of tissue near the Achilles tendon. Therefore, you need to undergo the diagnostic procedure and follow the appropriate treatment plan as soon as possible.

Some cases of Achilles Tendonitis lead to a torn or a ruptured tendon. The symptoms experienced in this situation are usually quite severe. In such instances, you may not be able to,

  • Bend your foot downward
  • Walk on your toes (only the affected leg)
  • Put any weight on the affected foot o even to walk normally
These symptoms are an indication of a serious problem that requires immediate medical attention.
