Health Tips:

  • "Pears with cheese" is an extremely high fat, high sodium and high calorie recipe. It is usually consumed as a main dish, rather than a side dish in the meal.
  • A word of caution- People with Diabetes mellitus, hypertension, any heart related ailments and those on a low fat diet must refrain from consuming this dish.
  • Pears on their own however, are one of the least allergenic foods, and are a good source of Vitamins A, C, E1, copper and potassium. They are helpful for lowering blood pressure, treating inflammation of mucus membranes, controlling blood cholesterol levels and in the treatment of arthritis and gout.
  • Pecorino is a hard, very salty Italian cheese, and is thus responsible for the high calorie and high sodium content of this recipe.
  • Pears can be combined with cottage cheese in the above recipe instead of pecorino to considerably reduce calories, fat, sodium and the cholesterol content. Also, retaining the skin can increase the dietary fiber and Vitamin C available to the body.
