There are some home remedies for croup that can help relieve symptoms and discomfort such as:

  • Avoid milk products and substitute these for water or juices instead. Clear liquids can help prevent dehydration that normally accompanies croup as well as loosen the congestion caused by mucus in the airways.
  • Try and prevent your child from crying as this can aggravate coughing.
  • Ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be administered to children to reduce a sore throat and fever. Avoid giving children medication that contains aspirin unless under the supervision of your doctor.
  • Avoid exposure to smoke and other irritants. If you smoke, do so outside the house or away from your children.
  • Stay away from sugar and sugary products as this can increase the inflammation.
  • One of the best home remedies is to give your child homemade chicken broth as this can help fight the infection and reduce the inflammation of the airways.
  • Foods rich in vitamin C or a vitamin C supplements will help fight the infection as well. Other supplements that may help are vitamins E and A, and zinc. However, do not take any supplements without consulting with your doctor first.
  • Drink a cup of hot water with lemon juice and honey to soothe a sore throat.
  • Take your child to the bathroom with the shower turned to hot. Sitting in a room full of moist air and steam will help reduce breathing difficulties until the attack passes.
  • Place a damp and cold cloth around the throat to reduce any swelling.
  • Massage lobelia extract on the chest, throat, and back for instant relief from breathing difficulties that accompany croup.
