Menorrhagia can be defined as excessive flow of blood during the menstruation phase. One of the phases of women’s menstrual cycle is the menstrual phase that is characterized by shedding of the endometrial layer of the uterus when there is no fertilization. Generally, during the menstrual phase, which lasts for 5 days, the blood flow is 65 to 80 ml. When the phase is prolonged to as long as 7 days and blood discharge is more than 80 ml, the condition is referred to as menorrhagia. Some of the causes of menorrhagia are disorders of clotting process, irregular hormonal activity, excessive buildup of endometrial layers, and certain other factors like irregular diet, physical exhaustion, and stress.

One of the prime symptoms of menorrhagia is excessive and prolonged blood flow. Other symptoms are pain in abdomen, uneasiness, headache, nausea, loss of appetite, and irritability. Here are a few natural remedies for menorrhagia that help relieve the affliction.

  • One of the most effective remedies that may be used as treatment for menorrhagia is to consume an infusion of coriander seeds, which can be prepared by boiling coriander seeds in water.
  • One of the best ways to prevent menorrhagia is to consume hot water on a daily basis.
  • You can also consume cinnamon as an effective treatment for menorrhagia. You can prepare cinnamon tea by boiling it in water, and you should drink it at least twice a day.
  • You can also consume an infusion of ginger that can be prepared by boiling grated ginger in water. It will help relieve menorrhagia and heavy menstrual bleeding.

Other than these home remedies, there are certain dietary measures that help prevent and treat menorrhagia. You should include a lot of fruits and vegetables in your diet, and opt for a protein-rich diet. However, you must avoid consuming processed foods, aerated drinks, and fatty foods. You should drink enough water so as to prevent restricted blood flow, which otherwise causes pain during menstruation. Drink at least six to eight glasses to water every day. You should also avoid smoking and limit your intake of alcohol.

Also, if the condition is severe in terms of duration of menstrual phase and pain, you should ideally consult a doctor. The remedies might serve to provide short-term relief, but proper diagnosis and medication would help in the long run.
