Insomnia is a very common problem, characterized by difficulty in falling asleep, or waking up, before you can get an adequate amount of sleep. Unfortunately, even though this problem is a common one, the cure for insomnia is not widely known.

In order to treat insomnia, it is important to first identify the factors that are causing this problem. Some of the common causes for insomnia include use of certain medication, stress, changes in the surrounding, ageing, depression, medical conditions, lack of exercise and the excess of stimulants (like caffeine). However, many people suffer from insomnia mainly because they have poor sleeping habits, like watching TV during bed time. In case it is determined that you have trouble sleeping because of a medical condition, it is important for you to first address that, which will promote better sleep too. However, if the problem is caused by minor factors, then you can use home or natural remedies for insomnia.

There are several steps you can take to deal with insomnia, without using any medication. In fact most doctors discourage the use of over the counter drugs to induce sleep, as there are several side effects that are associated with them. Given below are a few natural remedies for insomnia:

  • Valerian, for its soothing and calming effect on the body
  • Chamomile, a mild herb that soothes your nerves and relaxes your muscles
  • Kava, a sedative that induces sleep
  • Lavender, because it helps you feeler calmer and more relaxed
  • Lemon balm, as it has mild sedative properties
  • Passion flower, since it relieves stress and anxiety
There are several other herbs too that can be recommended as a part of natural insomnia treatment. However, there are side effects that have been associated with the use of several herbs and therefore, it is important to check with a doctor before using any of them.
