Causes of dry peeling skin on face and fingers

Dry peeling skin on the face and fingers is a common problem faced by people with dry skin. Your hands and face are more exposed to harsh elements and so they show the worst effects. Dry skin is caused by the extreme loss of moisture. The top layer of skin produces an oily substance called lipids that prevents the moisture within the skin from escaping. If your skin produces less of these lipids or if they are washed away frequently, the moisture from your skin will escape. This will leave your skin dry and peeling. Dry skin is often accompanied by itching and scratching your face or hands can leave your skin raw. Raw skin is vulnerable to skin infections especially dry skin infections.

You will have to follow a regular routine to treat the dry peeling skin on your face and fingers. Many cosmetic face washes can dry your skin even further. You can make your own moisturizing face wash with tomato juice and honey. Mix about 2 tablespoons of tomato juice with 2 teaspoons of honey in a small bowl. Soak a cotton pad in this liquid and slowly massage your entire face with it. Re-soak the cotton pad until all the liquid has been used. You can allow this face wash to dry completely before you rinse your face with cold water. Tomato juice is a very mild acid and will help to get rid of the dirt and grime without leaving your skin dry and peeling. Honey is a good moisturizer and provides your skin with essential nutrients and amino acids.

After you wash your face, make sure that you use a moisturizer. You can use a non-scented, non-comedogenic moisturizer. It would be better to use an anti-microbial moisturizer as these moisturizers help to prevent dry skin infections. You can also mix one drop of tea-tree oil and five drops each of olive oil, coconut oil, and almond oil. Add this blend of oil to ½ cup warm water and shake it thoroughly. Apply this water-oil mixture to your face and hands after you wash your face as it is effective and nourishing moisturizer. Tea tree oil also has anti-bacterial properties that prevent infection.

You can use the left over moisturizer as a last rinse after your shower. Add the rest of the moisturizing liquid to a mug of water and pour it over your entire body. Do not wipe yourself dry instead allow your skin to dry naturally. This will leave a very thin layer of oil over your skin that acts as a barrier and helps to prevent excess drying. Make a new batch of moisturizer every morning for optimum results.

Once a week add 2 tablespoons of crushed walnuts or almonds and a teaspoon of sugar to a fresh batch of your moisturizing liquid. Have a lukewarm or slightly warm water shower and then use this coarse mixture to exfoliate your skin. Concentrate on your face and hands. Exfoliation gets rid of the dead layers of skin and reveals the soft skin below. Although dry skin – or xerosis is not a serious health concern, it would be advisable to visit a doctor if it does not clear up after a few weeks of following these dry skin treatments.
