Right under my chest is a burning pain and feels like a knife is cutting me. I know it is a ulcer but what do i do? I vomit often and Zantac 75 just is not working.

Also note that a glass of cold milk or a cup of vanilla icecream instantly helps to relieve symptoms.

There are several causes for chest pain which could be heart related (cardiac), or gastrointestinal causes one of which is acid reflux or GERD or psychological causes such as panic attacks, anxiety, stress which has resulted in your ulcer. Your vomiting seems to be the acid reflux. I would suggest that you get yourself examined from your family physician as well for the exact medical cause in your case.

Meanwhile here are some natural tips that you will benefit from:

  • Diet and lifestyle changes help to control heartburn.
  • Do not have too long gaps between your meals and do not skip meals.
  • Eat your food slowly and chew properly.
  • Minimize or restrict foods which are likely to worsen your symptoms by stimulating acid secretion such as spices, cola beverages, chocolates, tea and coffee.
  • Avoid fried foods, fried snacks, hot spicy foods, pickles.
  • Use minimal spices especially chillies, pepper (red and black).
  • Fruits and vegetables are soothing. Avoid raw salads or unripe fruits. Eating a watermelon or banana every day helps. Fruit juices are soothing.
  • Stop smoking and restrict alcohol intake.
  • Drink plenty of water, about 6-8 glasses a day.
  • Do not eat just before going to bed. Make sure you do not lie down immediately after food. Maintain an upright position when you are resting for sometime after eating. This prevents any acidic reflux.
  • Since ulcers can be stress-induced, try to be as stress free as possible. I know it is easier said that done but make time each day at least for 30 mins to involve yourself in a mentally relaxing or stimulating activity which gives you pleasure and takes away your stress. The best way is to practice pranayam or breathing exercises for at least 10 mins.

Some home remedies which you can use are:

  • Eat some almonds when your feel symptoms of heartburn.
  • Chew a few basil (tulsi ) leaves to get relief from burning, nausea and gas
  • Suck slowly on a piece of clove.
