I FEEL LIKE I HAVE SOMETHING MOVING OR CRAWLING IN MY LEFT EAR, ESPECIALLY WHEN I LIE DOWN AND IT ACHES SOMETIMES. WHAT COULD THIS BE?

It is possible that you have some kind of ear infection. Some ear infections — infections of the skin in the ear canal, rather than normal ear infections — tend to give the patient the feeling that an insect or even several insects are crawling around inside his or her ear.

However, the possibility that there is actually an insect in your ear does exist. Although it is not a common occurrence, occasionally patients do turn up at hospitals with insects in their ears, ranging from cockroaches and beetles to spiders and moths. Although the insects usually don't really do any harm, the experience is quite traumatic. You can try getting the insect out yourself, by using mineral oil or baby oil. This however will only kill the insect, and getting it out may ultimately require a doctor's help. It is best not to poke around inside your ear on your own. Lidocaine however is supposed to be more effective, as it tends to make the insect leave the ear on its own. You can get lidocaine liquid or gel and try this.

The best thing however would be to visit your doctor, as he or she will be better equipped to remove the insect from your ear, or even detect whether the problem is actually an infection rather than an insect.
