Preventing Hair Breakage

by Sam Malone

Hair that breaks easily is indicative of a vitamin deficiency or dryness. Hair styling methods such as blow drying, straightening, coloring or perming your hair could also have adverse effects, causing the hair to break due to the dryness. Combing or brushing your hair too often can also weaken the strands and is one of the main causes of hair damage and breakage.

In order to prevent breaking of hair, it is necessary to keep it moisturized and healthy. This can be done by deep conditioning, carried out at least once a week. Using natural hair remedies is advised because they do not contain harmful chemicals that lead to further drying and weakening of hair. You must also remember to wear you hair in a style that does not cause too much stress for the strands. If you do notice split ends, attend to them immediately or they will work their way up the length of the strand, causing further damage, giving your hair an overall lifeless, straw-like appearance. Using large tooth combs and combing the hair gently, when it is damp or dry, is sure to prevent the breakage of hair and has been recommended widely.

The best recommended remedy for breaking hair is to apply a mixture of olive oil, mayonnaise and vinegar to the scalp. The olive oil will get into the scalp and moisturize each strand of hair from the roots. Mayonnaise is made up of oil and egg, both of which are beneficial for hair care. The protein available from mayonnaise strengthens the hair, while the oil present in mayonnaise gives it shine. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which seals the cuticle of the hair and prevents it from getting entangled. Vinegar is another medium that adds shine to hair, making it look rich and alive. Allow the mixture to get into the hair and wash it off with carbonated water. Another excellent home product for use in hair is baking soda. The baking soda removes the build up caused by other artificial hair styling products and also removes dead skin from the scalp, giving your hair a clean and healthy look. Onion is a vegetable that contains sulfur, and the juice extracted from an onion, when massaged gently into the scalp, will heal the follicles of the hair and promote growth of new strands of hair. An application of coconut milk to the scalp, allowed to stand overnight will leave hair with a rich, glossy shine.
