Headaches and Constipation

Having one illness can be tiring as it is, so if you are suffering from severe headaches and constipation, it is a certified nightmare. Keep in mind that the two are interconnected, and what you are experiencing is termed as constipation headaches.


The symptoms of a constipation headache are easy to identify. You will most likely be constipated, which involves difficulty in passing stools, and the pain will be concentrated in the area above your eyes and your forehead. There are different kinds of headaches that can affect you, but the most common headaches resulting from constipation are migraines and tension headaches. Treating the constipation can help in alleviating the headaches as well.

Why do I have a headache

When constipation causes headaches, it could be due to dehydration, stress, hormonal imbalances, or the presence of toxins.

  • Dehydration: Inadequate intake of fluids or dehydration makes you more prone to both constipation and headaches. Dehydration causes headaches as the brain detects low water content and produces histamines. Histamines are chemicals that cause fatigue and pain in the human body, thus causing headaches.
  • Stress: Stress and anxiety at work or home also leads to both constipation and headaches. Fears, uncertainties, despair, and mental strain can cause a riot with the digestive system, which leads to constipation. Undue and unwanted stress can also lead to headaches.
  • Hormonal imbalances: Pregnant women are more prone to suffer from both conditions due to the hormonal imbalances in the body. Some women also experience this before their menstrual cycle due to the hormonal changes in the body.
  • Toxins: Constipation leads to retention of wastes in the intestine, and this, in turn, causes the release of a variety of toxins in the system. The discharge of toxins causes headaches from constipation.

You could also have constipation, nausea, and a headache at the same time. This can be due to severe constipation. If you notice these symptoms call your doctor immediately, so that he/she can provide you with correct diagnosis and treatment.


Constipation headaches can be treated by treating the constipation. Hydrate your body with plenty of fluids. The recommended intake of water is six to eight glasses a day. Fruit juices and coconut water are also good fluids to drink. Foods loaded with a sugar alcohol or sorbitol like prunes, apricots, grapes, raspberries and apples are recommended as they help in softening the hard stool. A fiber-rich diet and exercising everyday will also ease bowel movements. For the headaches, you can opt for stress relieving exercises like yoga and meditation. Getting sufficient sleep and taking breaks during work hours will also keep both headaches and constipation at bay.
