How to use isabgol for treatment of constipation?

Constipation is a condition which is characterized by changes in bowel habits that causes symptoms which can be acute or chronic. This could refer to difficulty in passing of stools or the passing of hard stools. It could mean infrequency of bowel movements, that is, less than thrice a week or a sensation of incomplete emptying of the bowels. Constipation results when the digested food passes too slowly through the intestine and into the colon. Certain medications are known to cause constipation. These include pain killers, anti-depressants and iron supplements. Suppressing bowel movements frequently could also result in this condition. Low fiber diets are a cause for constipation, as fiber is essential for softening the stools. An overuse of laxatives may also result in disruption of bowel movements. Hormonal problems caused by thyroid disorders, menstruation and pregnancy could also have an effect on proper bowel movements. Diseases that affect the colon could affect the passing of stools.

Psyllium husk is obtained from the seeds of the psyllium plant. It is extracted from the seeds of the plant through the process of milling. Psyllium husk works by absorbing water and swelling up, thereby providing bulk inside the intestine. As such it moistens the stools and encourages proper bowel movements. It serves as an excellent home remedy for treating constipation and can be used when the daily diet lacks fiber. Regular intake of Psyllium husk will help to prevent constipation. A spoonful of Psyllium husk may be added to a glass of water and consumed immediately. Instead of water, milk or juice can also be used. This can be had thrice a day depending on the condition. It must be taken into account that Psyllium husk must not be taken in case of stomach inflammation or ulcers, or if there are other symptoms such as fever, stomach pain and vomiting. Also, it is not advisable to take Psyllium husk if you are already taking another medication. It is better to consult with your doctor on these matters first.

There are other home remedies you can use to get relief from constipation. Drinking a glass of lemon juice to which a pinch of salt has been added is effective in curing constipation. Apples are also known to be beneficial in treating constipation. Consuming a couple of apples every day will help to maintain proper bowel movements. Spinach helps to regulate digestion and works to clear the bowels. Another good remedy is to soak some dry figs overnight in water. Take them the next morning to prevent constipation.
