Ways to Jump Start a Healthy Change in your Life

by Garreth Myers

Most people will agree with the fact that living in today’s world is very hectic, for people of all ages. It is therefore very natural for most of us to get caught up in a fast-paced routine, which is very difficult to alter. Right from the time we wake up, we get moving, skip breakfast, get ready for work, take the bus or drive down to work, grab a quick sandwich or burger for lunch, rush back home, do the household chores as quickly as possible, fix a quick or an instant meal, have dinner, relax for a while and prepare for the next day, before finally hitting the bed. Following such a routine day in and day out, without a change can get to just about anybody.

Although changing ingrained habits is not easy, you can start with tweaking things around a little bit, like eating a few slices of fruit for breakfast, walking to locations that are close by instead of taking the car, and reaching out for a cucumber in place of a bag of chips. Working towards such changes gradually can help you approach the prospect of changing your life, with a higher chance of success. There are also a few strategies that can help you bring about the healthy changes that you want to see in your life. Given below are a few ways to jump start a healthy change in your life:

  • Set a goal that will work best for you, even if it does not seem too challenging. You will stand a better chance of being successful at changing your life positively, if your goal is attainable.
  • Ask yourself if you have a dream or a plan that matches your goal. For example, many people start off on a diet, but end up losing their motivation in a short while. However, if you have a closet full of clothes that you really want to fit into, then there is a much higher chance that you will stay committed to your goal, because of that dream that’s just within arm’s length.
  • Make only one choice for a change at a time, so as not to upset your life too much. It is best to bring about the health related changes first and then focus on other required alterations, like your job, social life, relationships and so on.
  • Commit yourself to your goal, right at the beginning, by taking up a challenge, or making a verbal or a written promise to yourself. Some people find supporters to keep them on track.
  • Keep yourself prepared for obstacles you may face and think of options that can help overcome these obstacles. Planning can keep you from giving up too soon.
  • Chalk out a simple reward plan, preferably one that is in line with your goals. If you are trying to quit smoking, don’t reward yourself with an occasional cigarette at the end of the week. Instead, treat yourself to something else that you really enjoy. Food rewards are usually not a very good idea.

The ways to jump start a healthy change in your life may not necessarily be the same for everybody. These steps are only guidelines that can be changed a bit to suit your individual needs.
