Treatment for Sciatica

There are no specific or medical treatments for sciatica. Most of the treatment is based around self-care at home. Resting is considered to be the primary method for caring for your back. However, there are other home treatments such as applying heat and cold to the back, therefore decreasing the pain.

Doctors usually prescribe pain medications to deal with the pain of Sciatica. In case the pain is very severe, doctors prescribe narcotic pain relievers such as vicodin and morphine for quick pain relief. In rare cases, the doctor may also recommend surgery. If you have persistent sciatic pain and the imaging tests show abnormalities in any of your bones or discs, you may end up needing surgery. However, surgery is considered the last resort and used only if your self-care at home or the pain medications have not worked well.
