Cheap Lice Remedy (that actually worked)
suggested by Alexis on Friday, July 6, 2007

Go to the medicine section in Wal-mart or any other store and look by the vitamins. There should be a bottle that says something about tea tree oil. Cover hair and scalp with it and let sit as long as possible. When finished just rinse and wash as usual and come with a fine toothed comb. It may take a couple of washes to get the minty smell out, but it's worth it. You shouldn't have to re-apply.

LICE CURES
suggested by Kelly on Friday, July 6, 2007

If you mix 1 part 3% peroxide with 2 parts water, mix in 20 mule team borax until you can not mix no more. Wash hair and towel dry and pour mixture into hair (IMPORTANT DO NOT RINSE OUT, YOU MUST LET IT DRY) One to two applications should do the trick. This mixture is very sticky so it sticks to the parasite killing it. This cure also works for fleas and mange in dogs.

Heating Treatment
suggested by Toni on Monday, May 21, 2007

My daughter was very prone to head lice as a child. Her hair is too kinky curly for the commercial nit combs and I worried about odd remedies such as kerosene and rubbing alcohol. It occurred to me that to clear bedclothes of lice, they must be dried on high heat for 30 minutes, so I had her blow dry her hair for half an hour. Heat kills lice on contact. No risk of cancer, no over drying of skin, no damage to hair that a conditioner won't take care of. Works every time. May need to do it two or three days in a row, but usually not.

Olive Oil
suggested by Michelle on Saturday, May 19, 2007

Put olive oil on the hair and let sit on as long as you can(all day if possible). It is also a great way to add moister in your hair unlike those lice shampoos that dry your hair out. The oil will make it easier to get nits out too! Note that it takes a few shampooing to get it out of your hair so it won't look greasy. I have also used baking soda to help wash it and the nits out. It works like a dream. Repeat it for a few days to ensure there are not nits missed and reinfestaion. The oil smothers the lice causing them to not be able to breath therefore they die.Remember to always wash everything your child or you have been in contact for a few days to make sure you don't pick up more lice due to them being able to live for a few days off the head.

suggested by [unspecified] on Thursday, February 8, 2007

This works! It's not even close to twice the cost of regular shampoo and doesn't burn the eyes or scalp, no waiting two hours, rinses out easily, and actually heals the scalp and nourishes the hair! Thank you everyone for suggesting Margosa. I used it on my daughter just like normal shampoo and all tne bugs and nits washed right out. WOW! We use it once a week and haven't had any problems since. My deepest gratitude!

dish washing detergent
suggested by Laura on Thursday, February 8, 2007

Dawn dish washing detergent kills lice bugs as well as fleas. I coat my daughter's hair in dawn while her hair is still dry. I use just enough water on my hands to make it lather a little. Then I put on a shower cap and let her play for about 30 minutes then rinse. I then use vinegar or conditioner to comb out nits.
