Diet for Cushing Syndrome


Cushing Syndrome is a metabolic disorder which affects 15 people in a million. Some of the symptoms include high blood pressure, bruising, muscle weakness, and sudden weight gain. A diet for Cushing Syndrome should include healthy foods like low-fat dairy, whole grains, vegetables and fruits that will help you reduce the weight gain which accompanies Cushing Syndrome. Eating foods which have high protein content will help in the prevention of muscle and bone loss caused by high levels of cholesterol.

Some of the foods include almonds, spinach, black beans, cheese and milk. Make sure that you limit the amount of sodium you consume to keep a check on your blood pressure. A diet low in sodium will also help in preventing the edema associated commonly with Cushing Syndrome. Caffeine is also considered to be harmful to individuals with Cushing Syndrome because it tends to stimulate the pituitary gland, raising the levels of cortisol that is already elevated. Hence, it is important that you avoid beverages and foods that contain caffeine that include chocolate, soft drinks, tea and coffee. You should instead drink fruit juices, herbal teas, and water.
