The situation is worse if you are pregnant, as pregnant women need to avoid taking any kind of pain killers or medications, especially in the first trimester. However, dry socket pain treatment can include some home remedies which can aid in minimizing the pain.
Clove oil is supposed to be one of the best cures for dry socket pain. Clove oil, a natural antiseptic and natural pain reliever, is easily available over-the-counter at most pharmacies. You can pat some clove oil to the dry socket and teeth around it with the help of a cotton ball. However, first dip the cotton ball in water before soaking it in clove oil; water will lessen the pungency of clove. Repeat this process once more during the day.
Other tips for relieving dry socket pain are as follows:
- Apply a cold compress or ice pack on the face to reduce the swelling and the pain.
- Lightly bite into a cold tea bag with the teeth near the painful area.
- Rinse and gargle with lukewarm water with salt in it. Do this several times in a day.
- Stay hydrated by consuming adequate amounts of water or liquids. This helps ease the pain and the dizziness which may accompany a dry socket.
- Gently bite into a piece of damp gauze as this will prevent saliva and air from coming in contact with the dry socket. Saliva and air can add to the pain. Change the gauze, as and when required.
- Turmeric is considered a natural antiseptic, which has the ability to fight infection and reduce inflammation. Add a pinch of turmeric (easily available in Indian groceries) to a cup of lukewarm water and gargle or rinse with this solution.
- Yogurt is a natural antibiotic, so include it in your diet.
- Avoid eating with the painful side of the mouth. It will not only increase the pain, but the area will also come in contact with food and water.
- Rest and try to get some sleep
