What is a fast good cure for ringworm on the leg?

Though it can affect anybody, ringworms are most common in children. The name suggests that it is a sort of a worm infestation; however there are no worms involved. Ringworm, is a fungal infection and gets its name from its appearance.  It looks like a circle or ring with a red rash-like border and an even toned skin in the middle.

Ringworm is caused by a fungus by the name of “tinea” and can affect the skin at various parts, like the scalp, feet or groin. When the fungus affects the feet / legs it is called tinea pedis.

Ringworms are contagious and can be easily passed on to others through direct contact or through used combs, contaminated vessels and household items and surfaces. Pets (especially cats) are also carriers of this fungus.

Home remedies and self-care is usually the first and natural ringworm treatment option. Application of over-the-counter antifungal lotions / ointments usually cures ringworms effectively and quickly.

However if the fungal infection covers a large area and lingers on for more than three weeks despite the antifungal creams, it is best to consult a doctor. The physician may prescribe an antifungal topical cream or antifungal oral tablets or pills.

Self-care and hygiene tips to treat ringworms are as follows:

  • Always keep the affected area clean by regular washing. Apply a thin layer of the topical creams and ointments only after cleaning the area. You can also use an antifungal powder which contains miconazole or clotrimazole
  • The tinea fungus which causes ringworms grows in warm and humid conditions; hence it is important to keep the area extremely dry. People who sweat a lot should take care to keep the body dry.
  • Avoid wearing clothes that cover, brush against and aggravate the affected area.
  • Wear open shoes which allow the feet to breathe and discourage the buildup of moisture.
  • Always wear clean, washed socks.
  • Make sure to properly dry the space between toes.
  • Wash bedding, pillow covers and night-clothes daily till the infection clears.
  • Avoid contact with infected pets and immediately get veterinary help to treat them.
  • Do not apply any homemade pastes, packs and mixtures to the area. It will lead to bacterial infection.
