Temporo-Mandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ) is basically a set of symptoms observed in an individual in the form of a grinding sound or a clicking when you close the jaw or even open the jaw. TMJ is mainly caused by a malfunction of the joint where the lower jaw or the mandible meets the skull. Relief from TMJ pain can be gained by shiatsu. This is known to promote and assist the healing process by releasing the muscle spasms and tension in the jaw thereby providing an overall stress release. Through this there will also be a calming of the nervous system. To gain relief from tmj one should first concentrate on releasing the tension as one moves their jaw from side to side, opening the mouth wide and clenching their teeth. Then one should start the shiatsu treatment by pressing both of the jaw with the heel of their hands. Thereafter one should press the same point again beginning with the mouth in an open position so as to position the pad of the index finger in the middle of the muscle.

Following this, one should close their mouth firmly till they are able to feel some amount of tolerable pain and breathe deeply promoting relation of the muscles. TMJ disorder is observed in people most commonly in the form of pain and stress in the jaw and neck. In certain extreme cases of TMJ, the patient may experience jaw locks which are very painful and can continue for an undetermined period of time. Pain relief from TMJ can be treated using certain simple jaw exercises that can even be practiced at home. The key to relief from TMJ pain is to first relax and then ease the tension in one's jaw. Another technique that is used to promote relief from TMJ pain is to apply mild pressure using a damp, warm cloth on the affected area and then slowly counting from one to ten and then reverse again. The process of counting will allow the individual to concentrate on their breathing and will thereby help them relax and also get through the pain associated with TMJ in a calm manner. Diet also plays an integral part is solving the problem of TMJ in quite a few individuals. It has been found that magnesium is most effective in providing pain relief along with certain other foods that may be prescribed by one's doctor. Pain relief from TMJ could be achieved by concentrating on the trigger points.
