Traditionally,  people would say run and do cardio exercises, but that is only so good. Sit ups work the lower portion of the abdominal muscles and the hip flexors. Crunches work the top and the middle.

A combination of crunches and sit ups starting in the full upright position, going half way down and then back up ten times, then starting laying flat on the ground and doing crunches that take you half way up in series will do more than just one or the other.

Also, laying on the floor, face down, with your hands straight in front of you like you would if you were going to dive in to water, and then raising yourself (keeping your legs flat) up using your back muscles will strengthen your lower back and glutes, which will help pull your sides into proper form. This will increase the over all structure of your mid section, front, back, and sides to give you a more shapely appearance.

Also take into account proper diet of protein and carbohydrates. Be sure to drink plenty of water. In combination with long walks or swimming this will greatly increase your body's production of lean muscle, which aids in burning.
