How to Help Digestion
by Kevin Pederson
Digestion is a long process that begins with food consumption itself. human beings have a well developed digestive system that is capable of handling a large variety of foods. Digestion begins with the process of chewing.
Here, food is mixed with saliva and broken into small pieces that are easy to swallow. Swallowed food is then sent to the stomach. The human stomach produces many different acids and enzymes which are used for the process of digestion.
These acids and enzymes are sent into the stomach pouch when the individual has eaten food. The food is then broken down due to the various chemical reactions that take place. This broken down food is then sent into the small intestine. Here, the various useful nutrients from the food are absorbed into the body for distribution around the body. Food continues to pass through the intestinal system as various nutrients are absorbed from it. The waste from this process continues to move through the small and then large intestine. It eventually reaches the rectum from where it is disposed of.
The process of digestion thus has many different stages and requires many different components for its proper functioning. There are many enzymes that are used to break down different food types. Apart from these enzymes, the digestive process also depends on fiber. Fiber helps to give bulk to the food and helps it move efficiently through the intestinal system. Without fiber, food would get stuck and would ferment in the digestive system. Some forms of fiber also absorb nutrients which makes sure that the body does not absorb too many nutrients.
There are many digestive system disorders that can create havoc in the life of an individual. Some digestive system disorders are related to the lining of the stomach. In this case, the lining is usually compromised which causes pain and indigestion. Certain auto immune diseases can cause problems with the stomach lining. The intestines are also susceptible to many diseases and infections which affect the functioning of the digestive system. Finally, individuals may suffer from a simple imbalance which causes a temporary stomach upset.
In general the foods that help digestion are naturally available foods. Fruits and vegetables in their natural form are good for the digestive system. Certain foods are exceptionally good for the process of digestion. Banana is one fruit that is capable of sorting out an upset stomach. It contains plenty of fiber and also has certain enzymes that help improve the process of digestion. Curd is another food in the list of foods that help digestion. Curd contains bacteria that help the process of digestion. In some cultures, curd is an essential part of the diet.
When it comes to foods that help digestion, it is very important for an individual to realize that there is no magic food that boosts the digestive process. Digestion is based on the quantity and quality of food consumed by an individual. A good, balanced diet is usually effective at curing any digestive irritation that an individual might have. Foods should be mild or moderately spicy and should not have too much oil in them. An individual should consume fruits as often as possible to boost digestion. Certain fruits like apples have high fiber content.
For individuals suffering from problems with digestive enzymes, there are digestive enzyme supplements that can be consumed. These supplements provide certain enzymes that the body should be producing on its own. The medication of an individual with such digestive enzyme supplements should only be done after consulting a doctor. Using a detailed medical history, the doctor can decide whether these digestive enzyme supplements are needed or not.
