An itchy scalp is something which is very irritating and problematic. There are a variety of causes of an itchy scalp and depending on what is causing it, the condition may be contagious as well. Some of the common causes of itching on your scalp are dermatitis, fungal infections, dandruff, dry scalp, and an infestation of lice.

If you have been experiencing white flakes, it is because of dandruff or a fungal infection. Wash your hair regularly and oil it at least once a week to keep your scalp hydrated and avoid itchy scalp bumps.

For skin conditions like eczema on your scalp, use a mixture of coconut oil with a few drops of lavender oil in it. This is one of the best home remedies for itchy scalp. Massaging your scalp with this oil will help you keep your scalp healthy. It will also help you deal with the itching on your scalp. Boil some water and add dried chamomile flowers and a few chopped sprigs of fresh rosemary to it. Strain this mixture and rinse your scalp and your hair with this solution while it is still lukewarm. This will keep your hair well hydrated and the scalp conditioned. One of the home remedies for itchy scalp is lemon juice. If you have itchy scaly bumps on your scalp, rubbing lemon on them can help you get a healthier scalp.

What are the common causes and symptoms of itchy scalp?

The causes of itchy scalp are many. Mostly, an itchy scalp is caused by a condition known as Pityrosporumovale. This fungal condition also causes dandruff. Pityrosporumovale is a naturally occurring yeast which feeds on human skin. As it feeds on your scalp, it begins to leave dry flakes of skin. Ultimately, it leads to flaky skin on your scalp. Most of the problems occur when the yeast begins to grow. Lice are another cause of an itchy scalp. These are small parasites which infest the scalp and suck blood from it, therefore causing itchy sensations.

Dry scalp could also cause the formation of dandruff. If your scalp is excessively dry, there may be itchy bumps and flakes on various parts of the scalp. When you shake your hair, the flakes may fall off from the scalp and settle on the shoulders. These flakes, which are especially visible on black clothes, are one of the prominent symptoms of itchy scalp caused by dandruff. Though dandruff is usually limited to the scalp, it may also spread to the forehead. When dandruff is very severe, the skin on your forehead may also appear white and flaky. The skin may also turn scaly. To soothe an itchy scalp, you will need to oil your hair regularly. Simply take some coconut oil, almond oil, or olive oil and massage it into your scalp. This will help you soothe the scalp.
