Boils or swellings on the legs are usually a precedent of an illness or a disorder in the body; especially in the case of recurrent painful boils that do not go away even after being treated at home. There are numerous reasons as to why you might be getting boils. However, before you resort to any treatment, it is advisable to get a thorough medical checkup to determine the cause of the boils and their recurrence.
It is extremely important that you seek an accurate diagnosis from a qualified medical expert before attempting ay form of treatment.
Various diseases and disorders share common symptoms, and if you start treating the condition without diagnosing the correct illness you may land up delaying the rightful treatment of a, perhaps, serious underlying medical condition. In short, refrain from self-diagnosis and self-treatment.
Having said that, boils can occur due to several reasons, some of them include inflamed tissues in the skin caused by the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus. Such boils caused by the resistant staph are referred to as furuncles or carbuncles and take place in a recurrent manner among patients. Other types of boils are cystic acne that form when oil ducts get choked and infected; Hidradenitis suppurativa where numerous abscesses emerge due to a local inflammation of the sweat glands; and Pilonidal cyst which is a type of a localized collection of pus occurring near the buttocks formed due to long hours of sitting.
Boils and carbuncles are also likely to form among patients with diabetes mellitus, especially when subjected to shots of insulin, alcohol addiction or substance abuse, poor sanitary practices, allergic reactions or immune system conditions including HIV, or hereditary factors to name a few.
Most simple boils can be easily treated at the early stages and at home. However, if it is noticed that the boils recur even with on-going home treatment, it is time to consult a medical expert to prevent recurring and persistent problems. In some cases, medical treatment by a health professional may include piercing or opening up the boil to get rid of the pressure and drain out the fluid. Doctors usually prescribe antibiotics to prevent further infection.
It is also important to note that the occurrence of boils when accompanied by fever is a case of urgent medical attention. It may point to an infection of the lymph glands which must not be delayed at any cost. And most importantly painful boils that do not see much improvement need immediate specialized care and help.
