The armpits are a closed joint below the shoulder, where the arm connects to the body. Since it is a closed joint, it is often subjected to excessive sweating and humidity. When the sweat from the body accumulates in and around the armpits it causes skin irritation.
This is because sweat contains chemicals or odorants like urea, 4-methylphenol (p-cresol) and 2-methylphenol (o-cresol), in small quantities. These chemicals irritate the skin and cause a burning sensation. Since the armpits do not receive ventilation or breathing space, our armpits tend to accumulate more amounts of sweat than most other parts of the body.
In some cases body sprays containing alcohol or other chemicals also irritate the skin. Check to see if the irritation you are experiencing is on account of these deodorants or body sprays. If this holds true, changing your deodorant will also alleviate the irritation. In some cases armpit irritation can also be caused due to excessive rubbing against one’s clothes. This is commonly observed in people who wear tight fitting shirts or tops. The cloth material constantly rubs against the skin of the armpit causing severe chaffing which results in burning or irritation. The most logical solution to this problem would be to wear clothes that are comfortable and that do not stick to the body.
In most cases armpit itches are not a serious condition, and can be treated effectively at home. However, if your condition worsens, please contact your doctor as soon as possible as you could be suffering from a skin infection.
- Proper hygiene is the key to treating itchy armpits. The armpits are a hidden zone of the body and hence we pay very little attention towards its cleanliness as compared to other visible parts of our body. It is only when it begins to feel uncomfortable that we try to remedy the situation. Cleaning your armpits daily is very important. If possible keep your armpits free of hair growth. This will prevent sweat from accumulating in this region.
- Keep your armpits dry at all times. You can ensure this by dusting medicated powder on it. Alternately you cam also use non perfume based prickly heat powder to achieve the same.
- For instant relief from the itching and burning sensation you can apply aloe vera gel on your armpits. Aloe vera is widely acclaimed for its skin healing and cosmetic properties.
- You can also apply cold milk or cold water compresses on your armpits. You may add a teaspoon of turmeric to these solutions for better results. The cold milk compress will soothe and moisturize the area, while turmeric will ensure that any bacteria present in the area is effectively treated.
- Drinking plenty of water will ensure that your sweat is as diluted as possible since in the absence of water the concentration of chemicals is more prominent.
