Causes for bumps on the scalp

I get tiny bumps on my scalp from time to time. What causes this?
(27 Apr 2007)

There could be several causes for the appearance of tiny to medium sized bumps on your scalp. The most common of these reasons is dermatitis. A lot of people develop eczema on their scalp.

Since the scalp is covered with hair, it is not always possible to see what is happening on your scalp. Usually when the scalp begins to itch, you will first notice the appearance of the bumps. The red itchy bumps on scalp may also be a result of allergies.

If the skin is itchy and the tiny bumps begin to ooze a fluid, it could be dermatitis. This is often an infectious condition, and the oozing and weeping bumps could begin to crust. It is important to get yourself examined so that your scalp does not get infected. On both adults and newborns, scalp pimples could begin to form. This happens when the sebaceous glands on the scalp get clogged and are not able to secrete oil in the right manner. The hair follicles may get infected, and this could be one of the leading causes for hair loss. Most often, scalp pimples may disappear as suddenly as they appeared.  A doctor would be the best person to determine what causes bumps on scalp. If it is due to an infection in the hair follicles, you would see white bumps on the scalp.

I have hard lumps on back of my head. What could it be?

If you have a child, lumps and bumps on the scalp may be very common. Children often bump around their heads around while playing with each other. This could cause a hard bump on scalp on their heads. However, if the bumps and lumps occur on a child’s head or an adult’s head without any physical injury to the head, it could be a serious medical condition.

Often, there may be bumps on your head, and you never really realize until they begin to itch or hurt. If they are not hurting, they could be a deep pimple caused due to clogged sebaceous glands. However, if there is a large lump, which is soft and painful, it could be due to a tumor in the head. This diagnosis can be made only by a clinician. Usually, you would need to have some physical examination along with imaging to have the diagnosis ascertained.

Allergies are another cause of itchy scalp, and these may cause hives and hard bumps on head. These hives appear as large or medium sized bumps that can be easily felt. These may be itchy and may begin to cause discomfort over a period of time. When the allergy is treated, you will get rid of the bumps on your scalp. Dermatitis and eczema are other causes of bumps and lumps on the scalp.

Suggest some home remedies for small yellowish painful bumps on scalp?

If you have lumps on your head, it can be a really terrifying prospect. In fact, you may even have nightmares about having a tumor in your head. They are often painful and itchy, and may cause you great discomfort. Fortunately, there are ways in which you can treat these painful bumps on scalp with home remedies.

One of the best itchy scalp home remedies is yogurt. Yogurt has inherent cooling capabilities, and when you smear it on your scalp, it nourishes the skin while soothing it. You can also use a medicated shampoo if the bumps on your scalp are caused due to dermatitis or eczema.

Since there are many itching scalp causes, it will be better if you get yourself a diagnosis first. Shampoos that contain chemicals such as ketoconazole, salicylic acid, ciclopirox, selenium sulfide and zinc pyrithione can help keep your scalp clean, get rid of dandruff, and also soothe the scalp. Use these medicated shampoos every day.

Eczema or dermatitis can also be treated with the help of apple cider vinegar. After you shampoo with a medicated shampoo, just rinse your scalp with the help of a mixture of apple cider vinegar and water. You can also alternatively rinse your scalp with water and a few drops of tea tree essential oil.

Reasons for hair loss and red itchy bumps on scalp?

If you have itchy and painful bumps on your head, it is normal to worry about that. Often the bumps on scalp and hair loss come together. There are several causes that may lead to itchy scalp bumps. Here are some of the causes of these bumps:

  • Ringworm: This is a fungal infection that causes a ring like lesion on the skin. The perimeter of this ring like lesion is usually formed in the form of raised bumps. There may be flaky patches all over the scalp, especially in the area where you have the ringworm lesion.
  • Dryness and dandruff: While both dandruff and dryness do not cause the formation of bumps on the scalp, they do cause a lot of itching on the scalp. If the flakes begin to accumulate in a specific place on the scalp, it could lead to bump like formations.
  • Folliculitis: This is an infectious condition in which the hair follicles become infected due to the clogging of the sebaceous glands. These sebaceous glands may become clogged due to the sebum and dead cells.
  • Seborrhic dermatitis: This is another infectious condition that is caused due to yeast on the scalp. This yeast infection may be caused due to fluctuation in the hormonal levels. This condition that causes an itchy red scalp with hair loss and can be treated with medications.

  1. Eat less oily food to start with.
  2. Try to get rid of dandruff, in case you have the problem.

Bumps or sores on scalp might be attributed to folliculitis, an infection of the hair shafts. It can also be a result of dermatitis, viral infections or acne. Often, an internal sebaceous cyst appears on the face, scalp and ears as bumps, due to the blockage of ducts. Consult your dermatologist for guidance regarding the type of infection.
