Pyelonephritis is a urinary tract infection that affects the kidneys. It may be acute or chronic. The infection generally spreads from a bladder infection, and is bacterial.
Natural treatments and remedies are quite effective for urinary tract infections, but that is because most urinary tract infections are relatively mild and restricted to the bladder. Infections that afflict the kidney are a lot more serious and can cause a lot more complications. Natural treatments are only advisable for common mild UTIs.
Neglect and failure to provide proper treatment can prove fatal, so I would strongly urge you to seek medical treatment.
Most common urinary infections are not a cause for much worry and manifest in symptoms such as a burning sensation or pain whilst urinating, increased frequency of urination and constant urge to urinate. In cases that are more sever there may be bloody or cloudy urine, with a strong odor. Pyelonephritis is however a lot more serious than most other UTIs and it can even cause a scarring of the kidneys and lead to renal failure. In addition to the usual UTI symptoms there are others like back, side and groin pain, nausea, vomiting, fever or chills, and even pus or blood in the urine.
The natural remedies that are recommended for pyelonephritis are largely the same as those recommended for any other urinary tract infection. Their effectiveness here however may be negligible given the significant difference in severity of the conditions, and it is simply not a risk worth taking. Conventional treatments will comprise of antibiotic medications because of the bacterial nature of the infection. It is absolutely necessary that you follow through the entire course of medication religiously, as disruptive and casual use of antibiotics can often lead to bacterial resistance. Since antibiotic medications are dreaded by many because of the fallout, natural remedies can be administered along with conventional treatments. These remedies can hasten healing and the recovery process, reducing dependence on drugs, and also minimizing and repercussions from strong medications.
Some remedies or practices that you should follow include:
- Increase your intake of fluids. This is essential to flush out bacteria from the system and also dilute the urine. Distilled water is your best choice, and fruit juices are also extremely healthy options. Cranberry is particularly noteworthy for the health of your urinary tract, as it has the ability to flush out and get rid of bacteria.
- Heat pads can help offer some relief. Apply them on the abdomen.
- Aromatherapy can also help provide relief and facilitate healing. Soak yourself in a tub of hot water with some eucalyptus and sandalwood oil added in.
- Traditional Chinese medicine and homeopathy may also be able to offer some help.
