Acne is caused by the blockage of a hair follicle - which is the pore though which a strand of hair emerges. The hair follicles contain glands which produce the body’s natural oil called sebum. In some cases, dead skin cells within the follicle combine with the sebum to form a plug.
This plug may cause a bacterial infection within the pore and the resultant inflammation is seen as an acne lesion. An outbreak of acne is generally caused by excessive sebum production coupled with excessive skin cell shedding. This is generally observed most in young adolescents and is caused by hormonal fluctuations.
An acne lesion is also known as a pimple.
Acne treatments are available in oral or topical form. However it is not advisable to self-medicate with over the counter oral antibiotics. Topical retinoids too can be extremely harsh on the skin and so it is better to avoid them as well. Topical bactericidals have been seen to be extremely effective in dealing with acne. You will have to follow a regular skin plan to eliminate acne as well as prevent further recurrences. Homemade acne treatments along with topical bactericidal applications can be used as topical applications tend to leave the skin dry and irritated. Benzoyl peroxide is an effective acne treatment as it both kills the bacteria within the acne lesion as well as it helps to unclog the blockage.
Substitute your regular face wash for a medicated one that contains Benzoyl peroxide. Use this face wash at least twice a day to keep your skin clean and reduce the amount of bacteria present. Benzoyl peroxide tends to leave the skin dry, so make sure that you use a moisturizer after you wash your face. Do not use a cosmetic moisturizer as most of them contain chemicals that can irritate your pimples. Mix a spoon each of coconut oil, olive oil and almond oil. Pour this into a clean bottle along with a glass of warm distilled or boiled water. Cap the bottle and shake thoroughly so that the oil and water mix. Soak a ball of cotton in this homemade moisturizer and run it lightly over your face to moisturize it.
You can use a topical application containing Benzoyl peroxide as a night cream. This will help to control the acne but will leave your skin very dry. Soak a few almonds in water overnight and grind them into a fine paste the next morning. Use this paste along with a little warm water to gently wash off the cream and leave your skin moisturized. You can also mix a little coconut milk, rice flour and honey together so that it forms a thick paste. Add a finely chopped garlic clove to this paste and scrub your skin - especially your forehead and chin very gently with it. Coconut milk helps to moisturize your skin while honey helps to nourish it. Rice flour acts as an exfoliator and garlic is an effective bactericidal. This is therefore a gentle acne face scrub that can be used every alternate day. Follow this regular skin care plan to keep your skin free of acne.
