Reducing Facial Swelling

by Kevin Pederson
A swollen face can cause much worry and concern to someone who is going through it for the first time. This concern is mainly due to the ignorance of why it occurred and how long would the condition last. Probably the most common cause of swollen face is an allergy of some kind.

An allergy is essentially an abnormal bodily reaction to a substance that is largely considered to be harmless. The substance that triggers this reaction is termed to be the allergen. Another very common cause of a swollen face is it being the result of an injury such as the face suffering an impact of a very hard object – causing substantial inflammation of the affected region.

One cannot rule out the possibility of an oral infection, such as in the case of a gum infection or a cavity, causing the inflammation on the face. However, in this case, the swelling is going to be centered around the infection and the pain would be intensely felt within the mouth. As a result, this instance of face swelling can be easily diagnosed. In these cases the inflammation seems to be spread evenly throughout the face and there is no significant pain present that causes a lot of confusion in the patients. This will however require some extra effort to diagnose the root cause.

If the condition is not accompanied by any pain or symptoms, it could be caused primarily by the kind of diet and water intake you follow in your daily lifestyle. To elaborate, the puffiness could be nothing more than an attempt by your body to hang on to its water resources. Drinking substantial amounts of water over the course of the day help remedy this problem. The deficiency of Vitamin C is also known to give rise to the problem. The consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables would therefore go a long way into preventing the puffiness of the face as they are rich sources of vitamin C. Also avoid a very high intake of foods that are considerably high in fat or cholesterol content. Regular exercise will help the heart pump blood more effectively and ensure that the tissues within the body get the nutrition and fluids that are required to keep them in prime condition. Use cold compresses with ice wrapped in a towel and slowly and gently dab it over the worst affected parts of the face. Also make sure that you limit your sodium intake as it increase the fluid build up in the tissues of your face.
