Causes of kwashiorkar and marasmus

Both of these conditions result from protein/calorie malnutrition. Since the body is not receiving sufficient nutrients, it begins to break down muscle and tissue. Marasmus is typically without edema (water retention in the tissues) while kwashiokar presents with peripheral edema. These conditions can occur when people are starving. This is a significant health concern in many parts of the world.
