What to do for ear infection & sore thoat?



Weather changes are often accompanied with a spate of people falling sick and coming down with the common cold and sore throat. This causes the mucus to build up in the system, especially the ear-nose-throat canal. When the mucus gets accumulated in the inner ear, it can lead to an ear infection which can cause itching and even pain which stretches right from the ear to the jaws. In certain cases when there is a lot of mucus built up in the inner ear, the patient even experiences difficulty in hearing low volumes and certain pitches and the disturb in the balance of the inner ear can lead to dizziness. It is thus important to treat the ear infection, keeping in mind the cause as mucus build-up due to a cold and sore throat.

If you are suffering from intense pain due to the ear infection, you can apply a warm wash cloth on your affected ear to soothe the pain. You should also be careful while blowing, taking care to blow gently, clearing one nostril at a time, to avoid blocking the ears. The best way to unclog ears blocked due to a common cold is to put a few drops of warm water and brandy in your ears using a dropper. Allow it to stay for a couple of minutes before tilting your head and letting the liquid drain out. You can repeat this several times a day to ensure that your ear has been drained clean. Apart from this, you can also put a few drops of garlic juice in the ears to drain the mucus clogging them and also effectively treat the infection. Basil leaves have anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties and can beneficial for treating most infections. You can extract the juice from the leaves of the basil plant and put a few drops in the affected ears to treat the infection. You can also prepare an infusion using crushed basil leaves and water and drink this 3 to 4 times a day to treat your sore throat. Drinking warm water with some lemon and honey is also beneficial for treating the throat infection. Similarly, chamomile tea with some honey can be consumed 3 to 4 times a day to effectively treat the sore throat and get rid of the infection. Apart from this you should try and yawn periodically to contract the muscles and thus open the clogged Eustachian tube. Another way to drain the Eustachian tube is by sleeping with an extra pillow so that you are slightly elevated and the mucus slides downwards.
