Vagina has a type of smell that is quite normal. Every woman has some kind of smell in the vagina and the smell in itself should not be considered a problem. Vaginal smell may become strong or weak according to the menstrual cycle.

However, if the smell becomes unusually strong or foul, it is time to give proper attention as it may indicate an infection of the vagina or some other underlying problem.

Vaginal odor is usually a result of infection. Common infections, like bacterial vaginosis and trichomonas vaginalis, can give the vagina a fishy smell.

The smell can also occur due to yeast overgrowth in the vagina. It is better to visit a doctor and find out what is the exact cause and then treat it accordingly.

Meanwhile, follow some of the steps here to better manage your condition. Hygiene is the most important thing to get rid of this condition. Wash your genital area properly every day when you have bath. You can use lukewarm water and a mild antibacterial soap to wash your genital area. Once the washing is over, remember to thoroughly dry your skin around the vagina by wiping it with a clean towel. Any moisture trapped around the vaginal skin can increase chances of bacteria and yeast infection. You should also take care to choose the kind of underwear that you wear. Always use underwear made of cotton. Cotton clothes help absorb moisture and let the skin breathe properly. Avoid using nylon and other synthetic clothing as they tend to trap moisture and do not allow proper air circulation around the vagina. Without proper air circulation the genital area gets moist and sweaty, consequently promoting the growth of bacteria and yeast. In fact, to facilitate better air circulation around the genital area, at night you may avoid underwear and just wear loose clothing like nightgown or pajamas.

Besides these practices, you should also follow a healthy and nutritious diet so that your immune system grows string to fight against any infection. Eat lot of green vegetables, fresh fruits, legumes, cereals, and whole grains. Do also drink plenty of water so that the body flushes out toxins effectively. Avoid or minimize sugar intake because yeast feeds on sugar. Also make a habit of doing some mild exercise daily so that your body remains fit and healthy. It is also important that you sleep properly and manage your stress level effectively.
