Treatment for glaucoma?

Glaucoma is quite a serious ailment affecting the optic nerve. This disease causes the pressure inside the eyes to rise, causing severe vision impairment and partial or complete blindness. This disease usually affects the elderly, especially those who are above the age of sixty five years.


Diabetics are especially prone to glaucoma.

Unfortunately in this condition, there are no symptoms and therefore it is not detected until the disease is in its advanced stages. There are many causes for it and the most common ones are blood pressure, stress and poor diet.




To prevent or cure glaucoma, ingesting several vitamins and minerals is very essential. Vitamin A, which helps in preserving the cones and the rods in the retina, is an excellent remedy. Carotene is also essential in maintaining eye sight. Therefore, ingest yellow fruits and vegetables that are rich sources of vitamin A and carotene to keep your vision healthy.

Try taking about 50 mg of the bioflavonoid called Rutin. Rutin is to be taken thrice a day to reduce the pressure inside the eye. Spinach, a rich source of Lutein and carotene, is an excellent food for those who suffer from Glaucoma. Both lutein and carotene are required to strengthen the tissues in the eyes.

If you have the herb called eyebright, extract its juices that contain astringent products and are more soothing to the eyes than many eye drops that are commercially available. Another rainforest herb called Jaborandi, that contains pilocarpine, can also be used to soothe the eyes. Jaborandi has been used to cure glaucoma for more than a hundred years and has proven to be very effective. You could also try eating Ginkgo Biloba. It increases the amount of oxygen that is delivered to the eye and also helps clear many toxins. You could use Ginkgo Biloba mixed with zinc sulfate to help slow down vision impairment and loss.

Use a small amount of cayenne after diluting it with water. Use it in the form of an eye drop. Its anti-inflammatory properties soothe the membrane of the eyes and increase the flow of blood. You can also consume cod liver oil, which is rich in vitamin E that helps remove stray particles from the lens of the eye.

Fennel, a common kitchen ingredient, can be used to restore sight. Fennel can be taken orally or can also be steeped in water and then used to cleanse the eyes. To decrease the pressure inside the eye, you could also try dropping coleus directly into the eye. This increases the flow of blood to the eye.

Glaucoma is a condition where the fluid fills up in the eyeball and puts pressure on the nerves that carry visual signals to the brain, thus causing optic nerve damage. This leads to loss of vision and sometimes blindness if not treated correctly and at the right time. You need to see an eye specialist immediately if you feel you are viewing everything through a long narrow tunnel. Proper and timely medical care is essential for those who suffer from glaucoma to save and treat the eyes. It usually occurs in people above the age of forty years. It could also be hereditary or some times it could be caused due to the deficiency of vitamin A, C or B (thiamine). Symptoms the symptoms include pain above and in the eyes. A person may also see colored rings around lighted objects or lights.

People suffering from glaucoma should avoid having tea, coffee and other caffeinated drinks, as caffeine indirectly increases blood flow to the eye by increasing blood pressure. Tobacco and alcohol cause constriction of blood vessels and should also be avoided. Liquids like milk, water, juice, etc. should be consumed in small quantities with sufficient time duration in between. Do not consume excessive fluids at a time as this increases the pressure in the eyes.

Consume whole grains, fresh vegetables and fruits rich in vitamins A, B and C, nuts, and seeds. All orange and yellow colored fruits and vegetables like oranges, papaya, tomato, capsicum, etc., which are rich in beta carotene, are good for the eyes and must be consumed regularly. Eggs, liver and fish also contain vitamin A and must be consumed regularly to maintain healthy eyes. Drink a mix of juices of raw carrots and parsley to strengthen the eyesight.

Grind two small pieces of cardamom and dissolve it in a glass of milk. Boil it and drink this every night to keep eyes healthy and maintain good vision. Eat spinach regularly; you can boil it or steam it, use it raw in salads or mix and cook it with other vegetables. Spinach is rich in vitamin A and very good to maintain healthy eyes.

A person suffering from glaucoma should maintain a healthy lifestyle and avoid stress at all times. Avoid doing things that put too much pressure on your eyes like frequently watching television or movies in a theater, or working on a computer for a long duration, excessive reading, heavy exercises that cause a strain on the eyes, etc.
