Nausea Causes and Treatments

I am six weeks pregnant and have constant nausea and fever between 99.0 to 99.9. Is this normal? I have had two miscarriages (one this year). I am a nervous wreck. Please Help!

Please do not be a nervous wreck; it is not going to help you or your baby. You need to take extra care of yourself at this time, as that will make sure that both you and your baby are healthy. The symptoms you mention indicate hyperemesis. It is a severe kind of morning sickness when you have fever and can't keep any fluids down for more than 12 hours. This could lead to dehydration. You have had two miscarriages before but you have not mentioned anything about seeing a doctor. Have you been to a doctor yet? If not then please do see one as soon as you can, as you need immediate medical attention. Only a doctor can tell you the exact reason for your problems. You need a medical check up to see if there are any complications with your pregnancy. Regular medical checkups can help you avoid the problems and ensure safety of both you and your child.

Nausea is common during pregnancy and is experienced more in the morning, hence it is also known as morning sickness. You have a growing child in you that needs nourishment, and after a full nights rest you are on an empty stomach in the morning, that causes vomiting or nausea. You can easily prevent it to a great extent by having some water and eating something the first thing after you wake up. Keep some energy bars or crackers and water next to your bed so you can munch on it after you wake up or whenever you feel hungry.

The nausea usually goes away by the fourth or fifth month of pregnancy. But till then the easiest way to avoid nausea is to avoid an empty stomach and hunger pangs. Instead of having three large meals you could have 5 or 6 small healthy meals throughout the day.

You could also eat a few small thin slices of fresh ginger root or sip cold ginger ale during the day. You could also have ginger cookies or candied ginger. Ginger is really good for treating nausea.

Mint tea is also great when you feel nauseous. The mint aroma and the cool taste relax both your mind and body. Add a teaspoon of mint leaves to boiling water. (Do not boil after adding mint) Cover and let steep for 10 to 15 minutes. Strain and add honey to taste if you like. Inhale the aroma and sip slowly.
