My daughter contacted hair lice and nits. Over the counter medicines is too strong for her and it burned her scalp. Is there a home remedy you can recommend?

The third method is to use a natural formulation such as Nit Nurse which is a non-toxic, natural formula that provides a safe alternative to today's chemical-based hair nit treatments, effectively removing both head lice and lice nits in one simple treatment, stopping hair itching fast.

You can try any of the following home remedies (or several of them) to get rid of lice and nits

Wash custard apple seeds thoroughly with water. Make a fine paste of the seeds and apply to your daughters scalp like a hair pack. Make sure that the paste is applied all over the scalp and length of hair, and then cover her hair with a shower cap. Leave it on for a few hours and then wash off with tepid water. Once dry, use the olive oil and lemon juice mix as mentioned below. Custard apple seeds are known to kill the lice and nits effectively.

Mix lemon juice to olive oil. Apply this mix liberally on your child's hair, enough to cover the entire scalp and the length of hair. Cover using a shower cap and leave it on overnight. Next morning comb her hair with a fine comb (there are special ones available for this) to comb out all the lice and nits. Wash it off using a herbal neem (Margosa leaf) shampoo. Repeat every week, until you have all the lice and nits out.

For long hair take two egg yolks, 2 to 3 tablespoons of vinegar (apple cider vinegar is the best) and 2 to 3 tablespoons of lemon juice. Mix well and apply liberally covering the scalp and hair. Let dry for about 2 hours and wash off with cool water.

Take about 20 Holy Basil (Tulsi) leaves and 20 Neem (Margosa) leaves and wash clean with water. Make a fine paste and mix well. Apply this all over the scalp and hair. Allow it to remain for about 2 hours and then wash off with cool water. Do this at least two times a week.

To control and stop the lice from spreading use any of the above mentioned remedies for all family members. Make sure that your daughter's hair is always clean. Do not allow sweat and dust to accumulate as an unclean scalp attracts lice and may also cause bacterial infections and dandruff. Shampoo her hair with a mild herbal shampoo as often as required. Use a good conditioner with Neem (Margosa). You can also rinse your daughter's hair with apple cider vinegar; it is known to kill all lice in two days. Ask her not to have head to head contact with others who have lice.

Keep separate towels and combs for her and also for everyone else in the family. Wash combs with soap and give a final rinse in an antiseptic solution to get rid of bacteria. When you take her for a hair cut make sure and request the hairdresser to use clean combs.
