Weight gain around the waist line is a very common problem, particularly for men. This is in part due to biology and even more so due to the increasingly stressful lifestyle that we lead. Belly fat tends to accumulate more easily in individuals who live an unhealthy lifestyle that involves very little if any physical activity and a poor diet.

Overeating is not necessarily the cause for obesity in many cases and it has more to do with a faulty and imbalanced diet. If you have an unhealthy diet, merely cutting down on your food intake will not help you lose weight. Cutting down on your meals ensures that your daily calorie intake is slightly reduced but the reduction is not significant.

In addition to this, if you skip meals, your body metabolic rate slows down and your body then has a reduced calorie requirement which in turn means that you burn less fat than usual. It is therefore important that you make changes to your eating habits and lifestyle by incorporating a more wholesome diet, regular meals and exercise into your daily routine.

You will, first and foremost, have to cut down on processed flour products. White bread, noodles, pastas, etc. all contain hordes of hidden calories. You can substitute white flour products for healthier whole meal foods. Avoid beer, colas and other aerated beverages as all of them have a very high calorific value. Make sure that you have at least one serving of salad everyday. Try to follow a regular routine and instead of having a few larger meals have many smaller portioned meals. Limit your intake of processed sugars and include fruits in your daily diet instead. Raw fruits and vegetables are high in various vitamins and minerals and also have a high fiber content which is essential to good digestion. Do not indulge in late night snacks as this causes a spike in blood sugar levels which in turn results in an increased accumulation of fat. Late night snacks or meals are also unhealthy as these habits would imply going to sleep soon after eating. This practice gives your system very little time to digest and absorb foods. Make it a point to have your last meal at least two to three hours before you got to bed.

You will need to follow a regular exercise schedule in order to burn excess calories. Dieting alone will not give you as effective results as when combined with an exercise regimen. Even light exercise at home and daily brisk walks will help a lot.
