The first thing to know about chalazion is that they rarely affect the outer part of the eye, unlike sties. Basically, a chalazion is a blockage of one of the oil glands present in the lid area of the eye. It is mostly a blockage near the area of the hair root of an eyelash which is found in this general area.

This leads to swelling, which mostly looks like a bump that has formed underneath the skin of the eyelid. Since it is mostly internal, it is advisable to be very careful while administering self treatment to a chalazion. As a matter of fact, it is wiser to get a medical examination and follow a proper course of medical treatment for the same, just to be on the safe side.

Since this is not an infection of any kind, no antibiotics will be administered, so there is no need to worry about that. But please do note that if neglected or left alone, a chalazion can grow large and irritating enough to require surgery. Although this surgery will be very minor, simply a miniscule cut on either side of the chalazion to just drain it. The blockage should be easily taken care of with this method.

If you do not wish to go for surgery, you can try to take care of the chalazion yourself by applying warm to hot compresses to your eye. You must make it a point to soak a washcloth in warm water and then apply this. You can add a bit of hydrogen peroxide to the water in order to sanitize the eye area. The heat from the water will push the blockage out, as the fluid within your eyelid will expand and work at doing this. Apart from this method, there is nothing really safe that you can try without medical supervision.
