Treatment for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

What you are suffering from is known as Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or more specifically laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). It is caused by stomach acid moving up from the stomach into the oesophagus. Although your oesophagus can withstand a mild acid exposure your throat and larynx (voice box) cannot and this results in your hoarse voice. The good news is that this hoarseness is temporary and can even disappear completely overnight.

However, you need to make sure that you have no acid reflux issues during the night and right up to the time of your performance.

Most people who suffer from acid reflux have increased amounts of food in their stomachs due to the delayed emptying of the stomach into the lower intestinal tract. It would therefore be advisable that have your dinner at least three hours before you go to bed. Make sure that your dinner does not consist of fried or spicy foods and skip all alcoholic, caffeinated and carbonated beverages as these will increase stomach acid production. Drink warm water and honey help to soothe your throat.

Buy an over the counter medication that contains proton pump inhibitors and have it before your meals. You can also use an over the counter antacid before your performance (avoid the chewable antacids).
