A blockage of the arteries can be caused by a blood clot or the formation of plaque from high levels of cholesterol in the blood. Both of these conditions require intensive and sustained treatment to clear the blockage.
A blood clot forming in the arteries and veins is a condition called Thrombosis.
An infamous variant of this disease is the frequent-flier syndrome of deep vein thrombosis that can happen to passengers on long-haul flights. Thrombosis is caused by the formation of a blood clot in the area due to factors like remaining sedentary for a long period of time, injury to a blood vessel that causes clotting, or the spontaneous coagulation of blood, the roots of which could lie in an autoimmune disorder. When a blood clot forms in a blood vessel, it can be dislodged after the requirement for clotting is over.
Normally, the clot is then absorbed into the fibrous tissue of the vessel but in thrombosis, the blood clot breaks off, travels further, and blocks the artery or vein at a constricted point. This is a dangerous situation because the cells of the area that were supplied by the affected artery are then suffocated and starved of oxygen and nutrients. Eventually, the cells will die off. In conditions like Deep Vein Thrombosis or DVT, the broken clots can go on to affect organs like the lungs and heart. Resisting this condition requires keeping the blood moving by not remaining in a sedentary position for long periods and not allowing the blood to stagnate.
Cholesterol intake can also cause arterial blockages by constricting the blood vessels of the heart with the build up of plaque. The situation is caused by excessive amounts of cholesterol in the blood, which the cells of the body do not require. The macrophages of the body then absorb this cholesterol as it is bound to Low Density Lipoproteins or LDL. Absorbing this LDL causes the macrophages to swell up and form a plaque-like formation on the walls of the arteries of the heart, which if allowed to build-up even further will cause a heart attack. Preventing this condition requires regular exercise and activity, in order to increase the levels of High Density Lipoproteins, which carry excess cholesterol to the liver for recycling or excretion. Phytosterols that are available from plants, nuts and plant oils are a good measure to reduce the amount of cholesterol in the blood and quickly solve the problem.
