Carotid Artery Surgery

by Sharon Hopkins

Carotid artery surgery is a type of medical procedure that is used in order to remove a blockage in the area of the carotid artery. A blockage in the carotid artery may cause an individual to have a stroke. An individual’s carotid arteries are actually blood vessels that are located in the area of the neck. It is these blood vessels that supply the brain with the proper amount of blood flow. On each side of the neck a carotid artery is located. If the blood vessels in the carotid artery become blocked or narrowed the brain experiences a reduction in blood flow. This is one of the leading causes of a stroke.

As a person ages that person will begin to develop several fatty deposits in their arteries. These fatty deposits are known as a medical condition called atherosclerosis. Once the deposits in the carotid arteries become too big the individual will experience much more severe medical problems such as a stroke. Many people who have a blockage in their carotid arteries benefit greatly from having carotid artery surgery.

Coronary artery surgery may be performed on an individual who has a blockage in the coronary arteries of the heart. This blockage usually occurs when fatty deposits build up in the arteries of the heart. These deposits if allowed to grow large enough will then cause a blockage in the artery of the heart. This blockage can cause an individual to experience a heart attack. A blockage in the coronary artery of the heart is also known as heart disease.

Heart disease is called a silent killer because many individuals do not even realize that they are affected by the disease. An individual may not realize that they have heart disease until the individual suffers a heart attack. Once an individual experiences a heart attack the individual may need to have coronary artery surgery.

Coronary artery surgery is a medical procedure in which a doctor is responsible for removing the blockage that has occurred in the artery. Once the blockage is removed in the artery the doctor will try to repair the damaged tissue of the heart. This is major surgery that involves the opening of the heart cavity.

The best way in which to prevent a blockage in the carotid or coronary artery is to maintain a healthy diet and to participate in a routine exercise program. A diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables can prevent a blockage from ever occurring. This is one of the greatest and most effective preventive measures.
