Reason for high bilirubin level



There are many reasons that cause the bilirubin to become high. It is always advisable to go in for additional tests to determine the cause and nature for the constant phenomenon.

Bilirubin levels that are unnecessarily high may mean that too much is being developed by the body, normally due to hemolysis or that the liver is not able to effectively get rid of the excess bilirubin in a the punctual manner that it normally operates. The reasons for the sluggish behavior of the liver are numerous. These can be either due to a blockage of bile ducts, some sort of liver disorders seen usually in the case of cirrhosis or acute hepatitis, or genetic issues with regards to bilirubin treatment. Also when the bilirubin levels are found to be constantly high for a long period of time, it is also an indication of jaundice. And it is imperative that you go in to check and treat the condition immediately.

Please note that bilirubin is evaluated to determine or distinguish the nature of liver diseases, or keep a check on disorders such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, or gallstones. Patients requiring medical care due to sickle cell disease or hemolytic anemia may have a series of incidents where unreasonable RBC demolition takes place, thus causing the bilirubin levels to rise.
