My 13 year old son has scabies. I do not have the money to see a doctor. I have insurance but there is a large co-pay for going and they cannot see him for 2 weeks anyway. What can I buy over-the-counter to get rid of it.



There are several home remedies for scabies that you can be of help to your son. You need not worry as scabies is easier to treat than head lice or crabs.

Follow the few tips below to cure and prevent future occurrence of scabies.

  • Scabies is usually spread through close contact, so make sure to thoroughly wash bedding, towels and other clothing in hot water and bleach.
  • Keep the fingernails short and clean them carefully to eliminate any mites or eggs that might be present.
  • Ask your son to bathe using lice shampoo
  • Bathing with the water in which 10-15 drops of tea tree oil is very effective, as terpinen-4-ol existing in the oil has curative properties.
  • Chemicals such as permethrin, benzyl benzoate emulsion, and sulfur are effective in treating scabies. These are available over-the-counter in the form of creams, ointments and sprays.
  • Medication applied on the body must be kept for a minimum of 36 hours prior to taking the next hot bath.
  • Consuming large amounts of plain live yoghurt is an excellent antidote
