Vaginal odor natural remedies

Vaginal odor, is there a home remedy that is natural?
(26 Nov 2007)

First up, it is highly advisable for you to consult your gynecologist for a comprehensive diagnosis and evaluation. There is a possibility that these odors are indicative of underlying internal problems such as vaginal infections or cysts. Needless to say, it is not in good idea to ignore these symptoms.

Your doctor would be the ideal person to suggest the best treatment available to alleviate this condition.

Genital odors in women can be influenced by several factors which include age, genetics, hormonal balance, types of food consumed, daily routine, menstruation and even personal hygiene. Avoid wearing particular kinds of inner wear like panty hose and undergarments that prevent the smooth flow of air. It is highly recommended to use cotton inner wear as these are suitable for any weather and also allow for proper ventilation. Avoid vaginal douches because these can lead to unwanted irritation and you will gain no benefits from their usage.

Bacterial vaginosis could also be a possible factor resulting in foul odor. This condition is caused due to the excessive growth of various bacteria present in the vagina. Pains, burning sensation whilst urinating, grey or yellow colored vaginal discharge, excessive itchy and vaginal inflammation are the symptoms associated with bacterial Vaginosis. Oral antibiotics as well as medicated vaginal ointments are the preferred medications recommended by gynecologists to treat this condition. You will also need to bring about some changes in your lifestyle as well as your daily diet. Studies have shown that friendly bacteria, referred to as probiotics, function in restoring the necessary acidic balance in the vagina. Products such as unsweetened yogurt have a high content of live acidophilus cultures that can be consumed safely. Do remember to stay away from foods such as dairy products, cheeses, alcoholic beverages, beer and milk chocolates which contain excessive sugar and yeast.

The foul odor in your vagina can also be caused by an infection medically referred to as Trichomoniasis. This is a condition that is brought about by a parasite and occurs due to unprotected sexual intercourse with an infected individual. Vaginal discharge accompanied by a foul odor, vaginal bleeding, excessive itchiness and discomfort are symptomatic of this condition.

It is extremely critical that any kind of vaginal infection requires medical attention immediately as neglecting it can lead to complications such as premature birth, problems in conceiving, newborn babies with low weight, etc. Your gynecologist will evaluate your condition and recommend the best possible therapy.

Vaginal odor can be due to a sexually transmitted disease like trichomonas or trich, yeast infection, or bacterial vaginosis. Try these home remedies for vaginal odor -

  • Douche your vagina with a mixture of vinegar and water in equal proportions. This will help to eliminate the unpleasant vaginal odor.
  • Add 2-3 drops of tea tree oil in a cup of water. Apply this water to the vaginal area to reduce the odor.
  • If yeast infection or bacterial infection is the cause for your vaginal odor then add some yoghurt in your diet for acidophilus. You can even take acidophilus supplements.
  • Always remind your partner to wear a condom while having sex and avoid any sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Keep your vagina dry and clean. Avoid wearing synthetic clothing; instead wear clean dry comfortable cotton panties.
  • Avoid scratching. Try wearing boxer shorts while sleeping at night for better air circulation.
If the odor lingers for long time and is accompanied by itching or scratching then consult a specialist to diagnose the exact cause for the problem.
