Ear pain home treatment

An ear ache may be a sign of infection or a sign of a plugged Eustachian tube. Causes include:

  • Middle ear infections
  • Wax build up
  • Foreign objects in the ear
  • Tooth aches
  • Pressure changes such as in flights
  • Colds, allergies and sinus infections

One need not use antibiotics at the first sign of an ear ache, especially when there is no fever. It is best to adopt a wait and watch policy and see if the ear ache goes away on its own.

When the body overcomes an infection on its own, it develops resistance to that strain of bacteria. This is good for over all immunity and will help prevent a recurrence of infection from the same bacteria.

If the ear ache does not seem to be getting better in 3 days or if your kid develops fever and vomiting, you should consult a paediatrician at the earliest.

In the absence of serious symptoms, the following measures can be taken to help ease the pain:

  • For severe pain OTC painkillers may need to be prescribed by a doctor
  • Mullein oil is available in herbal or homeopathy stores and is one of the best known remedies for ear aches. Put 3-4 drops of warm mullein oil in the affected ear.
  • Garlic oil can be made up at home by mashing up a few cloves of garlic and heating them over a low flame in a coupleof teaspoons of olive oil. Let this mixture stand for fifteen minutes and then strain it and use it. A few drops in the ear will help with pain relief.
  • Put him to sleep with his head elevated
  • Try getting him to yawn and let him chew gum to see if any of these measures will help his ears pop
