How to reduce obesity
(15 Mar 2008)

There are a number of ways to treat obesity and attain a healthier weight. Depending upon your physical and mental health, and your willingness to participate in a weight loss program, you can opt for any of the various treatment methods available. It is important to look at your obesity weight loss program as a plan for life in order to ensure that an ideal weight is maintained throughout your life.

In conjunction with a reduced calorie diet and a daily exercise program, there are a number of natural obesity remedies that can help you in losing weight.
  • A number of medical studies have revealed that drinking soup can be the best defense against the release of hunger signaling cells. When an individual is hungry, the stomach starts to produce certain cells known as ghrelin. The ghrelin in turn alerts the rest of the body to fuel up. When an individual feels full, the stomach stops producing ghrelin and one is no longer over come with the urge to eat. Drinking soup helps in making one feel fuller for a longer period of time thus helping to eat less during meal times.
  • One important fat fighting chemical occurring in nature is found in turmeric. This important phytochemical found in turmeric is known as Curcumin. Medical research reveals that curcumin is extremely vital in preventing obesity and that consuming turmeric as a spice in a daily diet can be useful in preventing weight related disorders and weight gain. Curcumin is also useful in preventing a host of diseases and in combating various illnesses.
  • Fiber is the best known supplement in accelerating weight loss and when combined with a weight loss diet it can bring about dramatic results in acquiring the desired weight. Medical health experts are of the opinion that consuming approximately 25 to 30 grams of fiber every day can help in slowing down the absorption of food in the stomach and making the individual feel fuller for a longer period of time. It is important to start out slowly by adding approximately five to ten grams of fiber every day and proceeding on to higher amounts of fiber.
  • Recent research also points out to calcium as a natural obesity cure. Scientists believe that calcium plays a significant role in deciding how fat is stored and broken down in the body. It is believed that the higher the consumption of calcium, the greater amount of calcium stored in a cell, leading to a greater amount of fat being burned.

Obesity is nothing but the result of consuming excessive food due to a physiological and psychological need. It is important to understand what causes obesity and what actions you can, or rather need, to take in order to control/reduce obesity. Obesity can be caused by one or more of the following:
1) overeating, or increasing the intake of calories more than what the body requires
2) Thyroid or pituitary gland disorders
3) Hereditary reasons
4) Imbalance in hormones
5) Low metabolism
6) Inactive life style

Some of these might be out of our control, such as our genes or hormonal imbalances, but there are various routes you can take to fight obesity. For instance, intake of honey can be an excellent natural remedy for obesity. You can start with as little as 10 grams of honey mixed with hot water initially and slowly increase your dosage as you please, or you can also mix a teaspoon of honey with lime juice and warm water and have it at regular intervals. A lot of vegetables and herbs can also help you give your body the required proteins and nutrition without adding any fat. Cabbage, for example, is considered to be very healthy and effective against obesity. Intake of mint along with food can also prove to be beneficial for the body. You can either add mint to your healthy meal itself, or make a paste of mint leaves and have it along with your meal. Regulated intake of carrot juice can also help in reducing body fat and unnecessary weight. Having raw tomatoes or tomato juice early in the morning, before breakfast can also help reduce weight, but this remedy requires at least 2-3 months before it can start showing results. Besides this, you can also take ginger and lemon juice as an option as this juice would control the need for overeating. Boil sliced ginger in a pot and add lemon slices, continue boiling for about 10 min and drink the mixture while it is warm.

Although a healthy diet is very important, it is only one part of the solution. It is also very important to exercise everyday as this would help in increasing your metabolic rate and burning excess calories, which in turn affects how slow or fast you can lose your weight. Walking is one of the best exercises to begin with. Work out for about 30 min to 1 hour every morning; this improves the blood circulation in your body and helps in burning the excess fat.
