While growing your hair, one of the most common problems you encounter is knotted and tangled hair. This is not only frustrating, but can be very painful and damaging for your hair. Knots in your hair normally lead to hair loss, split ends and dryness.
Hair can become tangled for several reasons. Most often, if you toss and turn a lot at night then hair can get roughed up and knotted by the morning. If your hair is not sufficiently moisturized, then there are greater chances of your hair being dry and prone to friction and as a consequence it gets tangled.
A good hair care regime can minimize tangles and help you keep your hair healthy no matter how long you grow it.
One of the first things you need to keep in mind is that hair needs to be well moisturized. Massage oil into your scalp and hair before going to bed at night to reduce friction in your hair and keep it from getting tangled. Regular oil massages help keep your hair healthy and prevent dryness. Avoid using rough fabrics as pillow covers as they may damage your hair. Fabrics like cotton are too rough for the hair and generate a lot of friction that leads to knots. Satin pillow cases cause less damage to your hair as the fabric is slippery and will not let your hair become tangled while sleeping. Another way to prevent hair from becoming entangled while sleeping is to braid it before going to bed. It is important to disentangle your hair before stepping into the shower as hair tends to get knotted while you’re washing it. Brush your hair once to remove knots before you shampoo it and avoid piling all your hair on your head while washing. This is because your scalp requires more attention than the length of your hair as that is probably where the maximum build up of dirt is. Further, when you’re applying conditioner, try to spread it through your hair with the help of a wide toothed comb rather than with your hands to avoid entangling hair. While drying wet hair, try to keep it wrapped in a towel or air dry it rather than rubbing it with a towel as this leads to knots.
Leaving your hair loose leads to tangles and knots as your hair rubs against clothing and gets blown about in the wind. Braiding your hair is therefore a more ideal way of wearing your hair if it is prone to knots and tangles.
